Get Ready World

Well, tomorrow is the big day.  The one we've been waiting for all these weeks and months.  It is the day I have been dreading and the day that she has been x-ing off the calendar for these past twelve months.

Tomorrow, my youngest child turns 13 and enters that wacky, wonderful world of teen-agery.

Lord, have mercy.

Yesterday we had a huge snowstorm which of course meant that today was a snow day.  So I cancelled my hair appointment (which I so desperately need) in the city and stayed home to do what good mothers do:   Make birthday treats.

At our school's last book fair Anna made a great choice of a book that shows how to make really fun, really artful, really complicated cupcakes.  She talked me into making some for her best friend's birthday a few months ago.  They turned out less than stellar although the girls at the party made me feel like it wasn't a complete disaster.

So naturally, Anna has been anticipating that I would make some really awesome cupcakes for her birthday.  She has had it in her mind that I would these particular cupcakes that look like poinsettias for a reason I know not.  But I think it might have something to do with the fact that they were made with 220 pieces of gum cut out and arranged to look like flowers.  I am not kidding.  This child LOVES gum.

On Monday as I was trying desperately to figure out an easier type of cakes to make I came across some really cute ones that look like little monsters.  I casually suggested that it might be easier to make those than the gum flowers.  She went for it and I was thrilled.

This morning as I was baking the cupcakes Anna found a youtube video of the authors of her book actually making the very same cupcakes that I was about to make.  So we sat down and watched it together.  I was thinking, "that doesn't look so hard" and "I'm glad I saw how they did that".

Then I started to actually MAKE the little monsters.  Let's just say that they were not as easy as they looked and in reference to the last sentence in my fourth paragraph above, I am NOT a good mother.

I started by looking at all of the candy that was going into this project.  All of you mothers of sixth graders can thank me now.

Next, I got the birthday girl busy putting papers into the cupcake pans.

Putting the cake batter into the pans.  Using the ziplock bag method of the authors of this book was a genius idea.

And here's how the little monsters turned out.
