Leaving Ur

Recently I started attending a new Bible study at my church.  It is the Patriarchs study by Beth Moore. I love how she uses God's Word to teach us about God and to apply it to our everyday lives.

We've been learning about God calling Abram to a land he didn't know from his home of Ur. One of the things that we are doing in the study is using Ur as an acrostic for our own lives which we're calling Usual Routine.

If I haven't completely scared away everyone from reading this blog you know that I am totally living Abram's life right now.  God just keeps calling me out of my usual routine and is asking me to follow Him to a place I don't recognize yet.

Today I'm preparing.  I'm preparing physically and emotionally for my youngest son to leave home and go to a land I do not know--North Carolina.  It sounds wonderful and I can't wait to visit there.  But today I'm loving Ur just a little too much.  Today I would rather send him back to his college an hour away from home where I can pop in and have lunch with him occasionally or see him on a weekend if he comes home.

I'm pretty sure that my son feels a bit like Abram too.  He's lived 3 hours away from home before, but that was with his older brother.  In Canaan (North Carolina) there are no brothers, friends, mothers, fathers.  It is an unknown land.  But I'm trusting that it is a land of wonderful people, lessons in life, and growing in grace.

And Jesus is there waiting in the wings.  Just like He was for Abram.  Abram's descendants had to wait hundreds of years through many trials in the land that God promised.  But Jesus was there.  Waiting in the wings.  At just the right time He burst into history and rescued mankind from ourselves.

He's still here whispering to us, to me:

"In those days when you pray, I will listen.  If you look for me in earnest, you will find me when you seek me.  I will be found by you, says the LORD."  Jeremiah 29:12,13

"My heart has heard you say, "come and talk with me."  And my heart responds, "LORD, I am coming." Psalm 27:7,8

Again He whispers,

"Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything.  Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand.  His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6,7

"So God has given us both his promise and his oath.  These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie.  Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can take new courage, for we can hold on to his promise with confidence.  This confidence is like a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.  It leads us through the curtain of heaven into God's inner sanctuary.  JESUS HAS ALREADY GONE IN THERE FOR US." Hebrews 6:18-20a

What is you Ur?
